By equipping youth with knowledge of democratic institutions and civic participation, Vaan Muhil Trust empowers the next generation of leaders to engage responsibly in local governance, advocate for inclusive development, and contribute to building stronger and more accountable communities.
Training Programmes for Rural Youth
Vaan Muhil Trust organized one-day training programmes for rural youth across villages in five project blocks of Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar districts. The initiative aimed to empower young people with a strong understanding of democratic governance, constitutional values, and the principles of participatory democracy. The programme included four full-day and four half-day training sessions, providing participants with practical knowledge of democratic institutions, citizens' rights and responsibilities, local self-governance, and the importance of active civic participation.
A significant outcome of these trainings was the increased participation of rural youth in Grama Sabha meetings. For many participants, it was their first opportunity to attend and actively engage in these local governance forums. Equipped with greater confidence and awareness, they raised community concerns, participated in discussions, and interacted with local elected representatives. The initiative marked an important step in nurturing grassroots youth leadership, promoting informed citizenship, and strengthening democratic participation within rural communities.
One day Workshops for College Students
Vaan Muhil Trust conducted interactive workshops in 11 rural Arts and Science Colleges and at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, engaging students in meaningful discussions on the contemporary challenges facing Indian society. The workshops created a dynamic learning environment where participants critically examined issues such as caste-based discrimination, gender inequality, constitutional rights, and the importance of safeguarding democratic values. Through participatory discussions, group activities, and reflective learning, students were encouraged to examine their roles as responsible citizens and emerging leaders. The sessions inspired them to think critically about social justice, equality, and democratic participation, while fostering a deeper commitment to constitutional values.
A significant outcome of the workshops was the enthusiasm shown by students to extend these conversations beyond the classroom. Many participants pledged to initiate campus-level dialogues and awareness activities on democratic values, inclusion, and social justice, contributing to a growing movement of informed and socially responsible youth committed to strengthening democracy within their campuses and communities.
Interactive Sessions with Elected PRI Leaders
Vaan Muhil Trust organized two one-day interactive sessions that brought together college students and elected Panchayat leaders to promote dialogue on local governance and democratic participation. These sessions provided a unique platform for students to engage directly with elected representatives, enabling them to ask questions about the functioning of Panchayati Raj Institutions, local governance processes, and the roles and responsibilities of elected leaders. The interactions offered valuable insights into grassroots democracy and encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding of participatory governance.
During the discussions, several elected Panchayat leaders emphasized the importance of greater youth participation in local decision-making processes. They acknowledged that the active involvement of young people can strengthen democratic governance, improve community development, and foster more inclusive and responsive local institutions. The sessions inspired students to become more actively involved in civic affairs and reinforced the importance of youth leadership in strengthening grassroots democracy.
TOT Training Programmes for Youth
Vaan Muhil Trust organized two Training of Trainers (ToT) programmes for selected rural youth and college students from Pappakudi, Ambasamudram (Ambai), Cheranmahadevi, and Manur Blocks. The programmes were designed to develop a cadre of young leaders capable of promoting democratic values, constitutional rights, and community participation at the grassroots level. The trainings equipped participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage meaningfully with local governance institutions and to conduct awareness programmes for children and young people in their respective communities. Through interactive sessions, participatory learning, and practical exercises, participants strengthened their leadership, communication, and facilitation skills.
A significant outcome of the programme was the transformation in participants' perspectives. Many rural youth and college students shared that the training challenged long-held social beliefs and encouraged them to critically examine deeply entrenched social norms and inequalities. The learning experience broadened their understanding of democracy, equality, and social justice, inspiring them to become active changemakers and advocates for inclusive and participatory community development.
